How to Delete a Yahoo Mail Account Permanently

Deleting a Yahoo account doesn't just remove your inbox. It terminates your entire Yahoo ID — Mail, Fantasy Sports, Finance portfolios, saved searches, everything tied to that sign-in. And unlike Gmail, Yahoo has historically recycled old addresses, which makes the prep work below more important, not less: anything still pointing at your old address could one day land in a stranger's inbox.

Before you delete: 4 things to do first

1. Back up your mail via IMAP or a desktop client

   Yahoo has no one-click equivalent of Google Takeout for mail, so the reliable route is IMAP: add your Yahoo account to Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Outlook desktop (server imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 993, SSL) and let it sync every folder locally. If you use two-step verification or the client is rejected, generate an app password under Account Security at login.yahoo.com/account/security. Big, decades-old mailboxes can take hours to sync — verify the messages actually open offline before you delete anything. Yahoo's privacy dashboard at yahoo.com/privacy also offers a data download request, but don't rely on it as your only copy of your mail.

2. Cancel paid Yahoo subscriptions

   If you pay for Yahoo Mail Plus or any other Yahoo subscription, cancel it first at subscriptions.yahoo.com (or via the app store you subscribed through). Terminating the account does not automatically guarantee billing stops in every case, and you can't manage a subscription attached to an account you can no longer open.

3. Update every account that uses this address

   Search your inbox for "verify", "welcome", "receipt", and "password" to find banks, government logins, utilities, and subscriptions registered to the address. Change each one to your new email. Because Yahoo addresses can be recycled, a forgotten bank login pointing at your old address is a genuine account-takeover risk, not just an inconvenience.

4. Export contacts and check other Yahoo services

   In Yahoo Mail, open Contacts and use the export option (CSV) — contacts are deleted with the account. Also check Yahoo Fantasy (leagues you commission won't follow you), Yahoo Finance watchlists and portfolios, and any newsletters or comment histories you care about. None of it survives termination.

Delete the account: step by step

1. Sign in to the account you want to close

   Go to login.yahoo.com and sign in. If you've forgotten the password, recover it first at login.yahoo.com/forgot — you cannot terminate an account you can't access.

2. Open the account termination page

   Yahoo keeps the termination flow on a dedicated page rather than in everyday Mail settings. The easiest way to reach it: open Yahoo Help at help.yahoo.com and search for "close or delete your account" — the article links straight to the termination page (historically at yahoo.com/account/delete-user or a similar path under your account settings). You can also look for Manage your account → privacy/security settings for a delete or terminate option.

3. Read the warning and confirm your identity

   The page lists what you'll lose — Mail, Fantasy, Finance data, and access to anything using this Yahoo ID. Yahoo asks you to re-enter your password (and complete two-step verification if it's enabled) to prove it's you.

4. Acknowledge and terminate

   Tick the acknowledgment, then click Terminate this account (wording may vary slightly). You're signed out immediately and the account enters its deactivation period.

What happens after termination

• Mail stops arriving immediately. You can no longer send or receive, and there is no forwarding option after termination.
• Deletion isn't instant. The account sits deactivated for the recovery window (about 30 days for most users), after which Yahoo deletes the data. Some residual data may persist in backups for a while longer under Yahoo's retention policies.
• Everything on the Yahoo ID goes with it. Fantasy Sports teams and commissioner roles, Finance portfolios and watchlists, contacts, calendar, and settings are all removed.
• Third-party logins break. Any site where you signed in with Yahoo, or that emails codes to your Yahoo address, loses that path. Fix these before deleting, not after.
• The address may eventually be recycled. This is the key difference from deleting a Gmail account, where the address is retired forever. With Yahoo, assume a stranger could hold your old address one day.

Changed your mind? The reactivation window

Simply sign in again at login.yahoo.com with your old credentials. If you're inside the window, Yahoo walks you through reactivating the account, usually with your mail and settings intact. The window is approximately 30 days for most accounts, but it varies by region — accounts registered in some countries are held longer, up to around 90 or 180 days, to satisfy local requirements. Don't cut it close: once the window ends, the data is purged and neither you nor Yahoo support can bring it back.
